Anthropic's initial public offering could generate substantial wealth in San Francisco, supporting the local economy while potentially making the already expensive city more costly. Anthropic has not disclosed how much capital the company intends to raise. Speculation suggests Anthropic could seek around $100 billion at a $2 trillion valuation. San Francisco chief economist Ted Egan said that amount would exceed the size of any earlier IPO by a San Francisco-based startup by more than 20 times.
Egan said employees and early investors could use proceeds from selling shares to buy expensive homes and spend at restaurants and other local businesses. Egan said even a portion of the wealth becoming available as cash could noticeably affect the local economy. Prices in San Francisco's luxury housing market are already rising quickly. The IPO may not increase rents directly. However, a successful offering could attract additional AI investment, startups and high earners, adding pressure to housing costs.
The financial benefits would not be distributed equally. Egan said Anthropic's seven founders hold roughly half the company. Egan said employee stock ownership varies. The amount of newly available wealth that would actually be spent in San Francisco is uncertain.
AI has already contributed to San Francisco's economic recovery. Egan said a successful IPO could sustain that recovery. However, Egan said disappointing investor sentiment could slow venture capital investment in the city. Whether the offering would produce durable growth or primarily another increase in technology wealth and housing costs remains uncertain.
Large AI companies need additional investment because substantial revenue still falls short of spending. Anthropic reported a net loss of $80.75 billion against revenue of $16.29 billion during the first half of 2026. Anthropic's revenue for that period amounted to about $6.6 million per employee. Anthropic says the company's AI could help cure diseases and address major challenges. However, Anthropic acknowledges that the technology could present "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity."
Anthropic submitted confidential IPO documents in early June, a few weeks after OpenAI made a similar filing. OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT, does not expect a public listing before next year.
