Anthropic is in talks with U.K. computing infrastructure provider Nscale over a second multibillion-dollar deal to lease computing capacity in the United States, a person familiar with the matter said. The deal could be worth around $45 billion, the person said. The agreement would cover a second 460-megawatt data center at the same West Virginia site as the companies' first deal, the person said. The person requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the talks.
The companies previously signed a similar deal for a data center at the same site. The first deal was reported in August. Bloomberg first reported the talks over a second deal. Anthropic declined to comment. Nscale was approached for comment.
Nvidia-backed Nscale builds or leases data centers and sells computing capacity to hyperscalers and AI labs. Nscale is one of several companies that have emerged in recent years to develop infrastructure for artificial intelligence. Rivals CoreWeave and Nebius have seen their shares fall 28% and 27%, respectively, in the past month amid concerns over heavy borrowing. Nscale filed to go public on the New York Stock Exchange in September.
The Telegraph reported on Sunday that Microsoft had withdrawn from a deal to become an anchor customer for an Nscale data center just outside London. The Telegraph linked the withdrawal to delays connecting to the U.K. power grid. An Nscale spokesperson said Nscale remained committed to the project and was exploring alternative power sources for the site. The spokesperson said Nscale's relationship with Microsoft remained strong and long-term. The spokesperson said the London-wide grid issue had no impact on Nscale's other contracts.
Anthropic said earlier this year that growing demand for Claude AI models and products had caused inevitable strain on Anthropic's infrastructure. Anthropic has since announced multiple infrastructure partnerships to try to increase computing capacity. The agreements include major deals with Advanced Micro Devices, Elon Musk's SpaceX, Google and Broadcom.
