Anthropic submitted a Form S-1 registration statement to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday for a proposed Nasdaq listing using ANT as the ticker. Revenue totaled $16.29 billion in the six months ended June 30, compared with $1.16 billion a year earlier. Net loss reached $80.75 billion, largely because a fair-value adjustment to financing instruments produced a $72.39 billion accounting charge. Operating loss decreased to $693 million from $2.14 billion.
Anthropic was established in 2021 and operates under CEO Dario Amodei. Anthropic develops Claude AI models and products, including Claude Code and Claude Cowork. Anthropic raised $65 billion in May at a post-money valuation of $965 billion. As of September 30, more than 11,900 customers had each generated at least $100,000 in revenue over the preceding 12 months. Approximately 250 customers had each generated at least $10 million over that period.
Krishna Rao became Anthropic's first CFO in 2024. Rao faces the challenge of obtaining enough computing capacity for growth without letting infrastructure commitments overwhelm the business. Whether Anthropic can convert rapid revenue growth into sustainable profitability remains an open question as advanced AI systems become more expensive. Rao said on the Invest Like the Best podcast in May that computing infrastructure occupies 30% to 40% of Rao's time. Rao described computing capacity as essential to Anthropic's business. Anthropic uses Trainium chips from Amazon, tensor processing units from Google and graphics processing units from Nvidia.
Computing and infrastructure expenses totaled $8.95 billion in the first half of 2026, compared with $2.33 billion a year earlier. Anthropic says each dollar spent on computing infrastructure currently generates more than two dollars of revenue. However, Anthropic's S-1 warns that pressure to lower token prices could change that relationship. Revenue has increased faster than computing and infrastructure expenses. However, that difference does not by itself demonstrate better unit economics or establish a clear route to profitability. Other expenses, contractual obligations and future capacity requirements will also affect returns.
Dan Ives, a partner and senior managing director at Yorkville Ives & Co., described the filing as a pivotal development for technology and AI. Yorkville Ives & Co. analysts identified computing constraints, restricted shareholder influence and possible tensions between Anthropic's public-benefit mandate and financial returns. The analysts said near-term losses are enormous, but IPO investors will concentrate on growth into 2027 and 2028.
Raj Joshi, senior vice president of Moody's Ratings Corporate Finance Group, said the filing would improve visibility into AI laboratories' finances and contracts with major technology companies. Joshi said that transparency would improve investors' ability to evaluate risks throughout the sector. Anthropic also warns that losing ground to competitors in advanced AI development could reduce demand while infrastructure expenses remain substantial. Rao faces the task of maintaining growth, strengthening operating performance and managing computing commitments. Investors must balance the growth opportunity against competition and governance risks.
