According to 1M AI News, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated at the Morgan Stanley TMT conference that Anthropic’s employee retention rate is “the highest in the industry—and significantly so.” All seven co-founders remain with the company, and the first employee to leave did not occur until around the 20th hire. Competitors have offered Anthropic researchers compensation packages ranging from $100 million to $500 million—exceeding professional athlete salaries—but the company refused to match them, telling employees, “You’re here for the mission.” Amodei said substantial salary increases would only “fragment and damage the culture,” adding, “What they’re trying to buy is something you can’t buy—that’s commitment to the mission.”
He cited Meta’s poaching as an example: Anthropic lost only two employees, OpenAI lost “several,” and since OpenAI is about 1.5 times the size of Anthropic, the proportional difference amounts to 10 to 20 times. Amodei previously disclosed data showing that Anthropic’s employee retention rate over the past two years was approximately 80%, compared to 67% for OpenAI, 78% for Google DeepMind, and 64% for Meta. He also stated that Anthropic has “not hit a wall” in improving AI capabilities and that “this year will see a dramatic acceleration that surprises everyone.”
