Odaily Planet Daily reports that Anthropic and OpenAI are continuously developing industry-specific AI applications and features, raising concerns among some enterprise customers who fear they may soon have to compete directly with their own AI providers. Design software company Canva recently faced a similar dilemma. Previously, most enterprise customers assumed that Anthropic and OpenAI would always provide their most advanced AI models to external businesses via API, enabling companies to build their own products on top of these models.
However, as both companies increasingly roll out industry-specific AI applications, some customers have begun to worry that Anthropic and OpenAI may prioritize granting their most powerful AI capabilities to their own products rather than making them available via API to enterprise clients.
This shift may alter enterprises' long-term dependency patterns on AI infrastructure providers. Previously, companies typically viewed model providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic as underlying technology suppliers; however, as AI companies expand into the application layer, the relationship between both parties is gradually evolving from partnership to potential competition.
It is currently unclear whether Anthropic and OpenAI will adjust their API open policies, but industry discussions are intensifying over whether model companies will compete with customers for app markets. If top model capabilities increasingly favor proprietary applications, companies may need to reassess their AI supply chains and technology strategies. (The Information)
