The financing will support Antheia’s U.S.-based manufacturing strategy, bringing critical drug supply chains back home.
Menlo Park, California, October 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Advanced biomanufacturing company Antheia today announced it has received a conditional commitment from the Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) at the U.S. Department of Defense for a long-term direct loan of up to $80 million. Antheia stated that this conditional financing, combined with additional private capital, will support its U.S. manufacturing strategy and strengthen its ability to bring the production of critical drug ingredients back to the United States—ingredients essential to public health and national security.
The United States currently relies on foreign sources for approximately 90% of its key starting materials (KSMs) and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). The original text states that this supply chain dependency makes the U.S. population more vulnerable to drug shortages, which can be triggered by public health emergencies, natural disasters, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions.
Dr. Christina Smolke, CEO and co-founder of Antheia, said: "The United States' continued reliance on overseas suppliers of critical drug ingredients poses ongoing public health and national security risks. Advanced biological manufacturing provides the U.S. with a direct path to secure these supply chains and reclaim global leadership in strategic technologies. This conditional commitment from OSC marks a significant milestone in advancing domestic technology and addressing the nation’s most urgent priorities."
Antheia has been recognized multiple times for its bio-synthesis platform and U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities as priority technologies for building a more resilient public health system. To date, the company has secured substantial support, including $32 million in non-dilutive federal funding and equity financing from strategic investors with government ties, aimed at strengthening pharmaceutical supply chains and enhancing national and economic security.
Eric d'Esparbes, Chief Financial Officer of Antheia, said: “Securing long-term financing through OSC will provide Antheia with critical flexibility as we build our next phase of commercial growth. Expanding our manufacturing footprint in the United States is central to our business strategy. This funding will enable us to efficiently advance these key supply chain reshoring initiatives while fulfilling our commitments to customers, partners, and investors.”
Jeff Karras, General Partner of America's Frontier Fund and a member of Antheia’s board, said: “The United States should not rely on overseas supply chains for the ingredients that support our most critical drugs. Antheia is demonstrating that technology born in the U.S. can be transformed into domestic manufacturing capacity. This kind of strategic, long-term capital will help bring essential drug production back to the U.S. while building the more resilient industrial base the nation needs.”
This conditional loan commitment stipulates that Antheia must complete additional steps prior to final closing, including fulfilling financial, legal, technical, investment, due diligence, and other related requirements.
