Today's observation
AMD's Q2 2026 revenue, adjusted EPS, and revenue from all four business segments exceeded expectations, with data center revenue posting its first-ever triple-digit year-over-year growth; the company's Q3 revenue guidance also surpassed market consensus. However, gross margin fell short of expectations due to cost pressures from the scaling phase of the AI rack-scale system Helios, introducing uncertainty to this otherwise "broadly beat" earnings report, prompting a decline in the stock price.
Data per minute
• Revenue of $11.536 billion, up 50% year-over-year and 13% quarter-over-quarter, exceeding the market expectation of $11.309 billion
• Adjusted earnings per share of $1.66, above the market expectation of $1.62
• Data center business revenue reached $6.718 billion, a 107% year-over-year increase, accounting for 58% of total revenue.
• Client business revenue of $3.062 billion, up 23% year-over-year
• Game business revenue was $779 million, a 31% year-over-year decline, the only segment among the four to decline year-over-year and miss expectations.
• Embedded business revenue of $977 million, up 19% year-over-year
• Non-GAAP gross margin of 56%, GAAP gross margin of 54%, with the company attributing the difference primarily to costs associated with the ramp-up phase of Helios
• The midpoint of Q3 revenue guidance is $13 billion, above the market consensus of $12.52 billion

The "beat" in this earnings report is actually quite substantial: all four core metrics and next-quarter guidance surpassed market expectations, with data center revenue growth even breaking into triple digits for the first time. Market caution stems primarily from questions about whether profit margins can keep pace with revenue growth. Due to cost pressures during Helios’s ramp-up phase, this is fundamentally consistent with the same strategy currently faced by other AI giants—investing heavily upfront to build capacity before scale effects materialize. Short-term gross margin pressure does not indicate a flaw in the long-term narrative.
