Amazon issued a memo in September warning engineers against tokenmaxxing and urging more thoughtful AI use. The guidance stresses long-term outcomes over token usage metrics and highlights the cost and complexity of overreliance on AI. The company shut down an internal leaderboard in May after misuse. On-chain trading signals suggest AI efficiency is a growing focus, with support and resistance levels in development workflows becoming key. CEO Andy Jassy has said AI will reshape work and reduce staff in the coming years.

Amazon issued guidance urging software engineers to choose carefully when to use AI and avoid tokenmaxxing. The memo circulated among employees in September before Amazon published the memo on the company's website on Tuesday. The guidance updates Amazon's definitions of software development engineer and manager roles as AI becomes more prevalent.

Amazon said AI's impact on software engineering is only beginning and that future practices are still taking shape. Amazon said AI will occupy a central role in software engineering regardless of how those practices develop.

Amazon described token consumption, AI tool adoption rates, and code changes or reviews as "deeply flawed" measures of AI usage across teams or organizations. Amazon said those measures can increase costs and create excessive complexity. However, Amazon did not recommend abandoning the measures entirely. Amazon said token consumption and code generation should be evaluated carefully together with other data. Amazon favored assessing performance through outcomes over the long term.

Amazon also advised employees against using AI for tasks where the tools provide no benefit. Amazon said a lack of benefit from current AI tools is a finding rather than a failure. Amazon said engineers demonstrate the requested judgment when engineers can explain where AI does not yet improve their work.

An Amazon spokesperson said Amazon has not imposed limits on employees' token usage. Amazon closed an internal leaderboard in May after finding that employees were tokenmaxxing to move higher in the rankings. Tokenmaxxing involves developers maximizing AI use without giving much consideration to the resulting output. Tokens are data units that AI models process and generate.

Companies face rapidly increasing AI costs and difficulties determining whether AI improves productivity or delivers other worthwhile investment returns. Some companies have restricted employee token consumption to contain AI spending. Other companies have moved certain tasks to less expensive open-source models.

Amazon has rapidly expanded AI use throughout the business under CEO Andy Jassy. Jassy has predicted that AI will alter the scale and pace of daily work. Jassy has also said automation could reduce Amazon's corporate workforce over the next few years, while creating other jobs.
