Alibaba launched Qwen3.8-Max, a 2.4 trillion-parameter AI model, to compete with Moonshot AI's Kimi K3. The model is available via Alibaba Cloud with a 90% discount during the preview phase. Open interest in top altcoins has surged as AI infrastructure gains traction. Alibaba holds a 36% stake in Moonshot, and both firms are pushing open-weight models. Alibaba shares rose over 3% pre-market.

Alibaba just dropped what it calls one of the most powerful AI systems on the planet. The model, Qwen3.8-Max, carries 2.4 trillion parameters and landed on July 19, barely two days after Moonshot AI unveiled its own heavyweight contender, Kimi K3, with 2.8 trillion parameters.

Alibaba owns roughly 36% of Moonshot AI after pouring approximately $800 million into the company back in February 2024. So in a sense, Alibaba is competing with its own portfolio company.

The details behind Alibaba’s new AI flagship

Qwen3.8-Max is available immediately through Alibaba Cloud’s Token Plan and Qoder platforms. During the preview phase, Alibaba is offering the model at a 90% discount.

The model reportedly positions itself as the runner-up to Anthropic’s Fable 5, which places it squarely in the top tier of global AI systems.

Alibaba’s open-source Qwen model family has been gaining serious traction since its initial launch in 2023. The company claims approximately one million downloads per day across its open-source Qwen variants.

Moonshot AI, founded in March 2023, rocketed to a $2.5 billion valuation after Alibaba’s investment. Its Kimi K3 model, which edges out Qwen3.8-Max in raw parameter count at 2.8 trillion, is scheduled for a full open-weight release on July 27.

Why crypto investors should be paying attention

The open-weight strategy is particularly relevant here. Both Alibaba and Moonshot are betting that making powerful AI models freely accessible will generate more value through ecosystem adoption than through licensing fees. That philosophy maps almost perfectly onto the decentralized AI thesis that underpins projects building open, permissionless AI infrastructure on-chain.

Alibaba’s shares gained over 3% in pre-market trading following the announcement.

The bigger competitive picture

The fact that Alibaba simultaneously competes with and invests in Moonshot AI adds a layer of strategic complexity. That $800 million investment gave Alibaba a 36% stake, meaning the company benefits financially whether Qwen3.8-Max or Kimi K3 wins more adoption.

The open-weight release schedule is worth watching closely. Moonshot’s full open-weight launch of Kimi K3 on July 27 could trigger another wave of attention across both traditional tech markets and the crypto AI sector.
