Major AI stocks traded mixed on Friday after the Nasdaq Composite recorded the index's largest decline in four months on Thursday. The Nasdaq was almost unchanged on Friday afternoon. Investors awaited further details about Anthropic's forthcoming IPO and another round of earnings over the next week.
Meta Platforms traded slightly lower following a 7% drop on Thursday. Meta, a social media operator and major AI investor, announced a new share class in this week's earnings report, partly to finance additional capital spending. The announcement was interpreted as evidence that further AI infrastructure expansion would impose substantial costs on shareholders.
SpaceX, Oracle and Dell Technologies rose between 1% and 2% on Friday. Nvidia, Alphabet and Amazon declined by less than 1%. Major semiconductor shares mostly advanced after Thursday's losses, the largest since the summer.
Credit default swaps measuring perceived default risk at major AI companies mostly declined modestly. LSEG data showed Meta's five-year CDS spread narrowing 0.3% to 123. Credit default swaps let investors wager on defaults through contracts generally lasting five or 10 years. Investors also frequently trade the contracts to hedge positions or speculate on short-term market movements.
CDS premiums represent the buyer's annual cost in thousands of dollars. The premiums have increased over the past year amid concerns about risks assumed by companies spending heavily on AI. The premiums increased on Thursday after Meta decided to sell additional stock. Debt issuance has financed much of the AI infrastructure expansion so far.
Concerns about AI spending and investment returns have contributed to market volatility since Treasury yields climbed sharply in August. Higher yields altered investment and bond-issuance economics by making the higher risk-free rate more attractive.
Rick Meckler, a partner at family investment office Cherry Lane Investments in New Vernon, New Jersey, described Thursday's selloff and Friday's calm as further evidence of an uncertain market direction. Meckler said the market had remained close to record highs without advancing beyond those levels. Meckler said buyers had responded to each selloff while sellers had countered each advance, leaving the market moving sideways over an extended period.
Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B Riley Wealth in Boston, described the week as highly volatile. Hogan said rising inflation, particularly from unsustainably high energy prices, would eventually affect corporate earnings. Hogan said that effect had not yet appeared, but investors were positioning for the risk.
Shares in smaller AI infrastructure companies known as neoclouds, including CoreWeave, have fallen because of concerns about the companies' prospects. The companies are connected to AI data centers and other infrastructure projects. Recent share performance has prompted discussion on Wall Street that capital is becoming scarcer. Scarcer capital could increase costs further and potentially create financing problems later.
However, many investors remain optimistic about the sector. Anthropic, a major AI laboratory, is expected to release the prospectus for Anthropic's IPO in the coming days. Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft are expected to announce earnings next week. Meckler said AI revenue developments remained very strong, but questions persisted about costs and the durability of growth. Meckler said investors had not yet begun distinguishing winners from losers and were instead trading the sector as a whole each day.
