BlockBeats report, on August 5, according to WSJ, the AI hedge fund Situational Awareness suffered significant losses in July due to an aggressive investment strategy. Although it had previously attracted support from several prominent investors in Silicon Valley and Wall Street, some investors had raised warnings about the fund’s high-leverage approach and risk management.
Reports state that Situational Awareness, founded by 24-year-old Leopold Aschenbrenner, rapidly grew into a $45 billion AI investment fund despite lacking professional investment management experience. Its investors include Dan Sundheim, founder of D1 Capital; Neil Mehta, co-founder of Greenoaks; Gaurav Kapadia, founder of XN; Feroz Dewan, former head of public equities at Tiger Global; and Patrick Collison and John Collison, co-founders of Stripe.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the fund previously expanded its exposure to AI-related stocks through significant borrowing. After part of its holdings plunged in July, the fund faced margin calls from lenders and was forced to raise cash, ultimately selling the majority of its public equity portfolio to Citadel.
The fund's offering documents state that Situational Awareness has "no restrictions" on investment scope, position concentration, or leverage usage. Some investors previously warned founder Aschenbrenner that high leverage could pose risks and expressed dissatisfaction with the level of disclosure and frequency of communication.
Research and advisory firm Aksia recognized Aschenbrenner’s investment capabilities and industry influence in its March 2025 assessment, while cautioning investors to be wary of risk management issues arising from overconfidence, particularly when leverage levels are high.
Aschenbrenner founded Situational Awareness in 2024 and rapidly expanded its assets under management through accurate investment judgments in the AI supply chain. He gained recognition as the "Nostradamus of AI" for successfully betting on AI-related stocks such as SK Hynix and SanDisk.
According to recent investor letters, the fund has still risen approximately 80% this year, while holding private equity stakes in AI companies such as Fluidstack, MatX, and Anthropic. However, as the risks of high-leverage strategies come to light, the market is beginning to reassess risk management in the AI investment boom.
