Situational Awareness, the AI hedge fund founded by Leopold Aschenbrenner, reported significant losses in July 2026 due to its aggressive leverage trading strategy. The fund, which managed $4.5 billion in assets, received margin calls following a sharp decline in AI-related stocks and subsequently sold the majority of its public equity portfolio to Citadel. Investors had raised concerns about its unfavorable risk-to-reward profile and inadequate risk controls. The fund’s documentation disclosed no limits on leverage usage or position concentration.

Huo Xing Cai Jing reports that on August 5, according to the WSJ, the AI hedge fund Situational Awareness suffered significant losses in July due to an aggressive investment strategy. The fund had previously attracted support from several prominent investors in Silicon Valley and Wall Street, though some had warned about its high-leverage approach and risk management practices. The report states that Situational Awareness was founded by 24-year-old Leopold Aschenbrenner, who rapidly grew the fund to approximately $45 billion in assets despite lacking professional investment management experience. Its investors include Dan Sundheim, founder of D1 Capital; Neil Mehta, co-founder of Greenoaks; Gaurav Kapadia, founder of XN; Feroz Dewan, former head of public equities at Tiger Global; and Patrick Collison and John Collison, co-founders of Stripe. According to sources familiar with the matter, the fund had significantly expanded its exposure to AI-related stocks through extensive borrowing. After several holdings plunged in July, the fund faced margin calls from lenders and was forced to raise cash, ultimately selling the majority of its public equity portfolio to Citadel. Fund offering documents revealed that Situational Awareness imposed “no limits” on investment scope, position concentration, or leverage usage. Some investors had previously warned Aschenbrenner that high leverage posed substantial risks and expressed dissatisfaction with the transparency and frequency of communications. The research and advisory firm Aksia acknowledged Aschenbrenner’s investment acumen and industry influence in its March 2025 evaluation but cautioned investors to remain vigilant against “risk management failures stemming from overconfidence,” particularly when leverage levels are elevated. Aschenbrenner founded Situational Awareness in 2024 and rapidly expanded its assets under management based on his insights into the AI supply chain, notably profiting from bets on companies such as SK Hynix and SanDisk, earning him the nickname “Nostradamus of AI.” Recent investor letters indicate the fund has still risen approximately 80% year-to-date and holds private equity stakes in AI companies including Fluidstack, MatX, and Anthropic. However, as the risks of its high-leverage strategy have come to light, the market is beginning to reassess risk controls within the broader AI investment boom.
