Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund led by 25-year-old investor Leopold Aschenbrenner, is seeking new capital as investor sentiment shifts amid declines in AI stocks. The fund, which previously reached a $200 billion valuation with a 439% net return through June 2026, holds leveraged positions in Oracle, AMD, and other AI infrastructure companies. With the AI trading boom cooling, the fund is urging commitments by August 1. Altcoins to watch may attract renewed attention as investors reassess risk.

Huo Xing Finance reports that on July 30, according to the Financial Times, Leopold Aschenbrenner, a 25-year-old Wall Street newcomer dubbed an AI stock prodigy and former OpenAI researcher, has launched the AI-themed hedge fund Situational Awareness and is seeking new capital injections. Following a sharp correction in AI-related stocks, the fund—known for its highly concentrated bets on the AI value chain—has incurred significant losses and is currently raising capital through investor communications and potential asset sales. Situational Awareness was established in 2024, based on Aschenbrenner’s conviction that AGI is accelerating toward reality. At its peak, the fund managed approximately $20 billion in assets and delivered a net return of 439% as of June 2026, making it one of the most closely watched star funds of this AI rally. Its portfolio includes infrastructure and compute-related companies such as Oracle, AMD, Nebius, and Sharon AI, with leverage employed to amplify positions. However, AI trading has recently cooled sharply, with major indices like Korea’s KOSPI and the Nasdaq-100, along with multiple AI infrastructure stocks, experiencing significant volatility. Situational Awareness has been caught in the drawdown. According to the report, Aschenbrenner acknowledged increased market volatility in recent investor communications but framed it as a new investment opportunity, urging investors to commit fresh capital before August 1. This fundraising effort has become a landmark event following the retreat in AI capital expenditure trades. Over the past year, markets were willing to pay premium valuations for compute, chips, power, and cloud infrastructure; as tech stocks retreat further, capital is now reassessing the return cycles, leverage risks, and overcrowding within the AI value chain. Situational Awareness still maintains its long-term bet on AI trends—including potential future opportunities such as Anthropic’s IPO—but short-term market tolerance for highly volatile AI assets has clearly diminished. Notably, Situational Awareness’s previously disclosed 13F filings revealed substantial put option positions. Its Q1 holdings showed significant PUT exposures on major semiconductor and AI-chain names including SMH, NVIDIA, Oracle, Broadcom, AMD, TSMC, and Micron. This structure was initially interpreted by markets as a relative value trade: long exposure to AI infrastructure while hedging against potential corrections in large-cap chip stocks. However, put options do not guarantee full protection against losses. The 13F discloses only the notional size of the underlying options, not premiums paid, strike prices, expiration dates, or Delta—meaning the actual hedging effectiveness may be far weaker than the numbers suggest. Additionally, the 13F is merely a snapshot as of March 31; by July, when AI stocks sharply corrected, these puts may have already been closed, rolled over, or reduced—external investors cannot infer the current hedging status based solely on the Q1 report. More critically, the fund’s core long positions were heavily concentrated in a group of highly volatile AI infrastructure stocks—including Bloom Energy, SanDisk, CoreWeave, IREN, Core Scientific, Applied Digital, Riot, and CleanSpark—all tied to AI data centers, power supply, storage, GPU cloud services, or miner transitions into compute. These stocks exhibited extreme elasticity during the AI capex expansion cycle but have tended to decline more sharply than traditional large-cap chip stocks whenever market sentiment turns skeptical about AI’s return on investment, funding conditions, or customer demand.
