Blockchain innovation is accelerating as AI data center growth pushes grid modernization. FLASH AI reports rising electricity demand is spurring new solutions. Weavegrid is building software to optimize power use, while Veir, which raised $110 million in Series C funding, is developing superconductive lines. Ecosystem growth is central to the conversation, with experts like Kristen Eberhard stressing the need for more transmission lines and centralized power. Apoorv Bhargava and Tim Heidel also highlighted the urgency of adapting infrastructure to meet AI-driven energy needs.

Industry leaders said the growth of AI data centers could create opportunities to modernize the US electricity grid despite new pressures on infrastructure. Weavegrid founder and CEO Apoorv Bhargava, Veir CEO Tim Heidel and Rewiring America policy vice president Kristen Eberhard discussed those opportunities at TechCrunch Disrupt earlier this month.

The AI expansion has sharply increased electricity demand nationwide. Critics say the increase in connections is testing the capacity of America's aging grid. Concerns include sharply higher electricity bills in the short term and possible outages or other technical difficulties over the longer term.

Bhargava said utilities must manage a changing grid that includes renewable energy and additional demand from electric vehicles, data centers and heat pumps. Weavegrid aims to help utilities make better use of existing infrastructure through software that coordinates and manages electricity demand. Bhargava said Weavegrid's software can help organizations distribute electricity efficiently and optimize connections to lower bills for utility customers.

Veir is developing physical infrastructure to expand the grid and improve efficiency. Veir sells superconductive power lines designed to transmit electricity more efficiently than conventional lines. Veir has said the company's cables can transmit power five times farther than traditional cables while requiring 20 times less space. Veir raised $110 million in Series C funding earlier this month.

Heidel said the scale of investment in AI infrastructure is stimulating substantial innovation. Heidel said many new technologies are beginning to reach scale and could collectively help data centers operate as better neighbors to surrounding communities. Heidel urged faster adoption of those technologies to support the next phase of growth.

Rewiring America advocates for electrifying households. Eberhard said growing electricity demand from data centers has made grid modernization more urgent and increased industries' willingness to experiment. Eberhard argued that the grid needs additional transmission lines and centralized power plants alongside other resources that received less attention before AI demand created this urgency.
