AethexAI, a voice AI startup targeting markets in Africa and the Middle East, has completed a $3 million pre-seed funding round and simultaneously launched an enterprise trial platform, API, and SDK to enter the local customer service and call automation market.
The financing was led by 4DX Ventures.
This round was led by 4DX Ventures, with participation from Enza Capital, Dorm Room Fund, Mojo Ventures, and Stanford GSB 26 Fund. Individual investors include Stanford faculty, telecommunications industry executives, and AI researchers from Anthropic.
AethexAI was founded last year by Mariama Diallo and Ayooluwa Odemuyiwa. Diallo previously worked at Goldman Sachs and later joined ModelML, a YC-backed company, where she led product and growth. Odemuyiwa graduated from Caltech, worked at Meta, and subsequently attended Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Our proprietary small model reduces call latency.
The company did not adopt off-the-shelf orchestration tools like Vapi or LiveKit; instead, it built its own small models and orchestration layer, focusing on local dialects of English, French, and Arabic common in target markets.
The two founders said their research found that some businesses in Africa and the Middle East attempted to automate their call centers but reverted to manual processes due to poor results. Other businesses faced challenges in hiring automation engineers and controlling costs.
AethexAI believes that one of the core challenges of local voice AI is latency. Relying on large models deployed outside the region results in more noticeable delays and jitter during calls. To address this, the company has chosen to use smaller models to reduce response times across all stages.
Over 17,000 daily calls have been processed.
The company developed its own Kora series of models, with parameter sizes ranging from 300 million to 1.7 billion, significantly smaller than mainstream large language models. AethexAI believes this scale better balances speed and accuracy for its target market.
For data collection, the company uses anonymous recordings from call center partners and ships hard drives to radio stations across various regions in Africa to gather additional audio data. Meanwhile, the company engages university students in data labeling and organizing local name pronunciations to reduce training costs.
AethexAI states that its system currently handles over 17,000 calls per day. Current primary use cases include debt collection, customer activation, and KYC identity verification commonly used in the banking and telecommunications industries.
Start by targeting enterprise clients with a single use case.
On the commercial side, the company helps businesses identify suitable automation scenarios through live demonstrations and workshops, rather than attempting to automate entire processes all at once. The founding team says that, for now, they ask clients to select their most important scenario to initiate deployment.
The company is also hiring engineers through contracts to serve the local market and establishing channel partnerships with telecom operators to manage the telephony infrastructure required for voice AI calls. AethexAI believes that directly replicating plug-and-play solutions from European and American markets would struggle to adapt to local network, language, and cost conditions.
Lead investor 4DX Ventures stated that voice interaction volumes for businesses in Africa and the Middle East remain significantly higher than in Western markets, and local businesses require systems capable of handling dialects, code-switching, and informal expressions—creating opportunities for regionalized voice AI companies.
