Adobe delivered a strong quarterly earnings report with solid fundamentals.

In Q3 of FY2026, Adobe generated revenue of $6.76 billion, a 13% year-over-year increase and above the market expectation of $6.69 billion; adjusted EPS came in at $6.13, also surpassing the market expectation of $6.08. Customer subscription revenue reached $6.56 billion, accounting for approximately 97% of total company revenue, demonstrating the continued strength of Adobe’s core subscription model.

However, after the earnings report, Adobe’s stock dropped by approximately 2.5% in after-hours trading. The market’s concern was not with the just-concluded quarter, but with the slightly conservative revenue guidance for the next quarter: Adobe forecast Q4 revenue between $6.8 billion and $6.85 billion, with a midpoint of $6.825 billion, slightly below the market expectation of $6.85 billion; the adjusted EPS guidance midpoint of $6.33 was largely in line with expectations.

Compared to this minor guidance difference, the more noteworthy development this quarter is that Adobe’s AI strategy is transitioning from product deployment to user conversion. Adobe announced that its AI-first ARR grew by more than 150% year-over-year, and the total monthly active users across its creative and productivity products surpassed 1 billion. The question is no longer whether users are willing to adopt Adobe’s AI features, but how much of this usage will ultimately convert into new subscriptions, generative credits consumption, and enterprise contracts.

Understanding Adobe's earnings report requires more than just checking whether revenue and EPS exceeded expectations—it also requires examining whether AI is expanding Adobe's market or eroding the barriers to entry for traditional creative software.

Based on current data, there is no clear sign of AI replacing Adobe’s core business. Customer group subscription revenue increased by 14% year-over-year, commercial professionals and consumer business grew by 16%, and creative and marketing professionals business rose by 13%. Actual revenue for all three segments also exceeded the midpoint of the company’s prior guidance. This indicates that, despite the rapid adoption of generative AI, Adobe continues to grow subscription revenue without relying solely on price cuts or promotions to retain users.

Adobe's greatest advantage is its complete professional workflow. While standalone AI models can generate images, videos, or text, enterprise customers also require editing, copyright management, brand consistency, cross-team collaboration, and large-scale content distribution. Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Acrobat, Firefly, and GenStudio together form an end-to-end workflow from generation to editing to publishing—a product ecosystem that is far more difficult to replace than a single generative model.

Meanwhile, Adobe is expanding its free user access. The number of monthly active free users for creative products has surpassed 100 million, and monthly active users for Acrobat and Express exceed 900 million. The free strategy lowers the barrier to entry for Adobe’s ecosystem, helping the company compete against a large number of low-cost or free AI creation tools.

However, monthly active users alone do not equate to revenue.

Adobe needs to demonstrate that new users will gradually develop usage habits, consume more generative credits, and eventually upgrade to paid subscriptions. The more than 150% year-over-year growth in AI-first ARR is a positive signal, but the company did not disclose the absolute amount of this ARR in this quarter’s earnings report. Revealing only the growth rate without the scale leaves the market temporarily unable to accurately assess the actual contribution of AI revenue to the $27.5 billion total ARR.

This is also why the slightly below-consensus Q4 revenue guidance triggered a stock price decline. Investors have already seen rapid user base growth and now expect to see revenue accelerate in tandem. If AI monthly active users and usage continue to grow significantly while Adobe’s overall revenue remains at low double-digit growth rates, the market may question the monetization efficiency of free traffic.

Business and consumer growth increased by 16%, outpacing the 13% growth among creative and marketing professionals—a notable development as well. Acrobat, Express, and AI Assistant are expanding Adobe’s reach beyond professional designers to include students, small and medium-sized businesses, knowledge workers, and general consumers. Compared to the more mature Creative Cloud, this market has a larger user base and broader use cases, offering significant potential as the next source of growth.

However, expanding into the mass market may lower revenue per user. Free users, mobile users, and lightweight tool users typically have lower paying capacity than professional designers, so Adobe must strike a balance between user base size, conversion rate, and average revenue per user. In the future, it’s not enough to monitor only MAU—Adobe must also track the number of paying users, generated credit consumption, Firefly ARR, renewal rates, and average revenue per user.

The leadership transition is another variable. Anil Chakravarthy will assume the role of CEO on December 1, 2026, while Shantanu Narayen will transition to Executive Chairman. Chakravarthy previously led customer experience orchestration and global sales, with extensive experience in enterprise customers, AI marketing, and commercialization. This appointment suggests that Adobe’s next phase may focus not just on launching more AI features, but on converting them into measurable subscription and enterprise revenue.

From a financial perspective, Adobe still has ample room for transformation. Operating cash flow for the third quarter reached $2.52 billion, with adjusted operating profit of approximately $2.97 billion, and the company repurchased about 9.5 million shares. Unlike AI infrastructure companies that require massive capital investment to build data centers, Adobe primarily bears the costs of model development, inference, and product innovation, without needing to drive revenue growth through large-scale balance sheet expansion.

Next to watch are whether Firefly ARR can continue its high-speed growth, the conversion rate of free users to paid subscriptions, the volume of generated points consumed, enterprise adoption of GenStudio and AI agents, and whether the Creative & Marketing Professionals business can regain momentum.

The user base has already emerged, and the product entry points have been established. Adobe’s next step is to demonstrate to the market that these one billion monthly active users not only will use AI, but are also willing to pay for it consistently.
