Absa Corporate and Investment Banking, the corporate and investment arm of one of Africa’s largest banking groups, launched Absa Digital Asset Custody on Monday, going live with an institutional platform for safekeeping digital assets built on Ripple’s custody technology. Announced by Absa CIB on X as “a digital first for Africa, built to institutional standards,” the rollout comes roughly eleven months after the bank first unveiled its partnership with Ripple in October 2025.

Bank-Grade Custody for Institutions

The platform gives institutional clients a regulated environment to safeguard digital assets and manage private keys to institutional standards. Absa describes the service as covering safekeeping, key control, approval controls and audit trails, a vault rather than a trading venue. Ripple’s managing director for the Middle East and Africa, Reece Merrick, said the launch lets Absa “set a new benchmark for secure, compliant, and bank-grade digital asset management on the continent.” Absa has not yet disclosed which assets it will hold, its fee schedule or its first clients. The go-live lands as South African regulators push crypto firms into a licensed regime, and months after a Gauteng High Court ruling found bitcoin is “clearly money” under exchange-control rules.

From Partnership to Live Product

The go-live completes a rollout that began when Ripple named Absa its first major custody partner in Africa on October 15, 2025. At the time, Robyn Lawson, Absa’s head of digital product for custody, said the bank chose Ripple’s technology because it “meets the highest security and operational standards.” Ripple has kept expanding its custody offering since, including enhanced features for Ripple Custody aimed at fintechs and crypto businesses. For now, Absa’s product page directs prospective institutional buyers to its sales desk.

Ripple’s Africa Push

For Ripple, the launch deepens an African footprint that already includes payments technology for Chipper Cash and the rollout of its RLUSD stablecoin through local partners. The custody platform joins the firm’s wider XRP Ledger ecosystem, as Ripple works to anchor institutional digital-asset adoption across the continent. Ripple says its broader business holds more than 60 regulatory licenses and registrations, and earlier this year its custody unit added Securosys hardware security modules and Figment staking.
