ChainCatcher report: a16z crypto partner Ali Yahya posted on X that he has decided to leave a16z, relocate to San Francisco, and start a company. He noted that he has been with the firm for nearly a decade, and when he first met Chris Dixon, Ben Horowitz, and Marc Andreessen in 2017, he was an engineer at Google Brain working on robotics, deeply interested in open source but unfamiliar with investing. Ali Yahya said that at the time, Chris Dixon had already begun positioning a16z in the early crypto space through investments in companies like Coinbase, but the crypto team consisted solely of Chris himself, and he was looking to expand. Chris invited Ali to leave Google and help build the firm’s crypto business. He said that co-founding the team and supporting founders since then has been the most meaningful experience of his life, and he expressed gratitude to Chris, Ben, Marc, and the entire team. Regarding his new venture, Ali Yahya stated that it is still in its early stages, and his primary focus is on infrastructure that can support an open software ecosystem. He shared two observations: currently, most AI is designed for individual use, but the future will shift toward collaboration among multiple users and agents, potentially leading to large-scale open networks; software development costs have dropped dramatically, enabling software to be generated on-demand and discarded after a single use—this will transform the software stack and may give rise to a new type of AI-mediated operating system and an AI-native developer ecosystem. He invited individuals working in related fields, especially those based in the Bay Area, to reach out to him.
