This roundup covers gaming investment and financing and acquisition deals. Allie Garfinkle argues that the biggest gaming deals of 2026 are effectively AI deals. Garfinkle argues that investors are backing AI tools rather than hit games, studios or content, and that some investments scarcely qualify as gaming deals. The gaming industry depends on hits and faces high development costs. Success in one era does not guarantee success in another, as the challenges facing Microsoft's Xbox demonstrate.
PitchBook's gaming venture capital data for Q3 2026 puts year-to-date deal value at $13.7 billion across 430 deals. PitchBook data shows that early-stage venture capital accounted for 54.5% of Q3 deal value, up from 14.1% in Q1. However, venture-growth deal value fell to $269.4 million in Q3 from $2.3 billion in Q2. Content-focused startups attracted limited attention and raised $270.7 million in Q3, the lowest quarterly amount since Q4 2017.
Meshy, a California-based AI 3D generation startup, raised $400 million. Higgsfield, a California-based AI video generation startup, also raised $400 million. Investors view both rounds as AI deals. Four large gaming-related rounds came from China. Shengshu Technology raised $500 million. Shengshu Technology develops world models and has a notable AI video generation platform.
Garfinkle remains unconvinced that AI has entirely taken over gaming. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said this summer at Fortune Brainstorm Tech that Xbox was not going to become "xbox.ai". Garfinkle concludes that gaming is not undergoing a wholesale transformation into an AI business, but AI remains unavoidable in gaming.
Salience Labs, an Oxford, U.K.-based developer of photonic chips for data center infrastructure, raised $125 million in Series B funding. Bullhound Capital led the round, with participation from AMD Ventures, Intel Capital, SBI Group and others.
The roundup also covers RapidCanvas, an Austin, Texas-based managed AI execution company, raising $29 million in Series B funding led by Vertex Ventures SEA & India, with participation from Hitachi Ventures and existing investors; Greybull Stewardship acquiring Mid-West Textile, an El Paso, Texas-based used textile collection and recycling company, for undisclosed financial terms; Vista Equity Partners agreeing to acquire the Public Key Infrastructure business unit of HID, an Austin, Texas-based identity solutions company, for undisclosed financial terms; and City Therapeutics, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based developer of RNAi therapeutics, raising $200 million through an offering of 11.1 million shares priced at $18.
