This is insane—a dead fly’s brain has just been given a new robotic body. 166,700 fly neurons and over 25 million biological connections now reside inside a robotic body that looks nearly identical to the original. The lab attached cameras, wings, and motors to those neurons, then let the system figure out what the signals meant on its own. Light moves—the head turns. Airflow changes—the wings adjust. Another fly passes through the camera—the robot begins to chase it. Strangely, the brain needed very little mechanical infrastructure before its old instincts became useful again. Nature spent hundreds of millions of years building a nervous system capable of reacting, stabilizing, and chasing movement. Someone has now given that nervous system a metal body. The original fly is gone. But its neural wiring is still trying to fly.
