Many people misunderstand seppuku. Don’t you have the impression that “if you fail, you immediately perform seppuku”? In reality, that’s not correct. Seppuku was not something anyone could perform at will—it was a formal ritual that could only be carried out with the explicit permission of one’s lord. It was conducted in the presence of witnesses, with a second (kaishakunin) tasked with delivering a swift decapitation to end the suffering. Everything was strictly governed by established customs and protocols. Are there other common misconceptions about seppuku? Did anyone ever perform seppuku without permission? When and by whom were these rules established?
