The deforestation and environmental struggle in Akbelen Forest constitute an attack not only on nature, but also on fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. As GÖK-DER, we raise our voices against this massacre. Constitution of the Republic of Turkey: Article 56: Everyone has the right to live in a healthy and balanced environment. The state and citizens are obligated to protect the environment. Article 17: Everyone has the right to life and to preserve and develop their material and spiritual existence. Article 34: Everyone has the right to assemble peacefully and without arms, and to hold demonstrations and marches without prior permission. These provisions clearly demonstrate that the state and law enforcement agencies cannot obstruct the people’s struggle to protect their living environments. Repression, beatings, and arrests against citizens defending the environment violate the Constitution.
