Tesla Officially Launches Steering-Wheel-Free Cybercab Service in Austin. Tesla has officially deployed its purpose-built Cybercab with no steering wheel or brake pedals into its Robotaxi service in Austin. Unlike Tesla’s existing Model Y-based robotaxis, passengers have no physical driving controls, marking the transition of Tesla’s dedicated autonomous vehicle into real-world service. Cybercab operates using Tesla’s camera-based autonomous-driving system, and Tesla plans to expand the service beyond Austin. Tesla currently operates more than 200 unsupervised robotaxis across several cities, while Waymo operates roughly 4,000 vehicles across 14 cities.
