U.S. dismantles Sality botnet linked to cryptocurrency theft U.S. authorities, in coordination with European law enforcement agencies, CrowdStrike, and the Shadowserver Foundation, have dismantled the Sality botnet, a malware network operating since 2003. According to CrowdStrike, the operators of Sality used the clipjacking tool EggJagger to silently replace Bitcoin and Ethereum wallet addresses copied by victims with addresses controlled by hackers. Over the past eight years, this scheme has stolen at least 12.1 million rubles, equivalent to approximately $150,000 in cryptocurrency. The operation has severed the Sality group’s ability to communicate with infected devices. An estimated 15,000 computers were believed to have been part of this peer-to-peer botnet.
