The Zcash Z-Lexicon From Zero-Knowledge to Zillions: The Language, Mythology, and Identity of Private Money Bitcoin gave the world a new kind of money. Zcash is giving it a new vocabulary. Every great movement eventually develops its own language. Bitcoin gave us HODL, sats, stacking, honey badgers, and laser eyes. These expressions began as jokes, technical shorthand, and cultural references before becoming recognizable symbols of an entire financial philosophy. Zcash has something equally powerful emerging around a single letter. Z. The final letter of the alphabet. The first letter of a new financial vocabulary. What began with Zerocash, the academic cryptographic protocol rooted in zero-knowledge proofs, has expanded into a universe of zebras, zeal, zatoshis, Zodlers, and zillions. And at the center of this universe stands a particularly compelling character: Zatoshi, the imagined alter ego of Satoshi Nakamoto. This is the Zcash Z-Lexicon—and the Z Manifesto. Part dictionary, part mythology, part monetary philosophy, and part declaration of financial independence. The lexicon gives the movement its language. The manifesto gives it its principles. Some expressions are established technical terminology. Others are community inventions, cultural symbols, or proposals for the future. Together, they articulate a vision of money in which scarcity is verifiable, privacy is fundamental, and financial sovereignty requires neither permission nor public exposure. The Z-Lexicon defines the words. The Z Manifesto defines what they stand for. I. The Origins: Zero, Zerocash, and Zcash ZERO — The Beginning Zero is where mathematics begins, and zero-knowledge is where Zcash begins. Zero-knowledge cryptography allows someone to prove a statement is true without revealing the private information underlying that statement. In Zcash, this makes it possible to verify shielded transactions without publicly exposing their sensitive financial details. The implications reach beyond cryptocurrency. Zero-knowledge proofs can help establish identity, eligibility, compliance, and computational correctness without unnecessary disclosure. Zero disclosure of private information. Zero need for universal financial surveillance. Not zero accountability, but a different relationship between verification and visibility. ZEROCASH — The Ancestor The Zerocash research protocol built upon earlier Zerocoin work, demonstrating how cryptographic proofs could support private digital payments. Zcash emerged from this intellectual lineage, launching in 2016 with a 21-million-coin supply limit and proof-of-work consensus. The name Zcash is therefore not an arbitrary branding exercise. Its Z traces directly to Zerocash and the zero-knowledge research that made the system possible. ZEC — The Money ZEC is the native cryptocurrency of the Zcash network, just as BTC is the native currency of Bitcoin. Zcash is the protocol. ZEC is the money. Like Bitcoin, ZEC has a maximum supply of 21 million coins, a proof-of-work foundation, and an issuance schedule that reduces new supply through periodic halvings. But ZEC introduces a distinctive monetary capability: it can be transferred using shielded transactions that protect sensitive financial information while preserving cryptographic verification. One ZEC equals 100 million zatoshis, or zats. ZEC can move transparently or privately, depending on the transaction type and wallet capabilities. Privacy is a capability of the network, not an automatic property of every transaction. Bitcoin established digitally scarce money. ZEC adds the possibility of financial privacy without abandoning verifiability. ZEC is not merely a ticker symbol. It is the monetary expression of the Zcash philosophy. Zcash is the network. ZEC is the money. ZK is the mathematics. ZK — The Mathematical Superpower ZK is shorthand for zero-knowledge, the broader cryptographic field underlying Zcash's privacy capabilities. ...
