So, @Zcash Ironwood flipped on yesterday. Quick rewind: back in May, researchers uncovered an “infinity” flaw in Orchard’s zero-knowledge circuit. In theory, it could’ve enabled counterfeit $ZEC. The team shipped an emergency fix quickly, and there’s zero indication it was ever abused. But because the pool is fully shielded, outsiders couldn’t independently demonstrate that the circulating supply remained pristine. Transparent chains (like Bitcoin) let anyone total balances and verify supply. Shielded pools hide that math, so if doubt appears, you need a hard accounting boundary. Ironwood deletes that gray zone. Ironwood froze the legacy Orchard pool (~3.7M ZEC, ~22% of supply then) and opened a new pool with a corrected circuit. Funds can leave the old pool only through a “turnstile” that proves exits never exceed legitimate entries, so any hypothetical counterfeits can’t escape. Full nodes can verify total ZEC supply now, with no “trust us” and no waiting for migration. The upgrade also adds deeper formal verification, ZIP 2005 quantum safeguards for the new pool, and a clean migration path. This is a win for privacy.
