The current greatest challenge for $ZEC is being trapped in a state of ambiguity: 1) It is unclear whether the Orchard privacy pool has truly been subject to a "hacking" attack over the past four years—and even whether this might have been a deliberately engineered "infinite mint" backdoor by the team cannot be proven; 2) Even assuming a real attack occurred, it remains unclear how the hacker could have double-spent ZEC to extract real value, since bypassing Turnstile’s total supply verification implies the theft could only have occurred silently and incrementally—by using counterfeit ZEC to gradually purchase real commercial services such as merchant goods, VPNs, or gift cards. This type of hidden damage, unlike obvious large-scale coin theft, effectively depletes the intrinsic value that all ZEC holders are entitled to; 3) Even though Shielded Labs is set to announce a new upgrade featuring a new privacy pool and enhanced Turnstile accounting and mathematical proofs, this can only demonstrate that the current verified supply in the Orchard pool is less than the total amount deposited—yet it still cannot rule out the possibility of future undiscovered vulnerabilities, as there is an inherent tension between verifiable supply and privacy black boxes. This directly erodes the market trust Zcash has built over years in its privacy services: while "privacy" itself remains intact, "verifiable supply" has become ZEC’s fatal contradiction.
