Stablecoins could be solving one of the most expensive problems in global finance. A new report estimates that sending $200 internationally costs around $2 through stablecoin payment rails, compared with $12.72 using traditional remittance services. An 84% difference, although the figures come from different reporting periods. Speed is another advantage. Stablecoin-funded payouts reached local bank accounts in a median of 2 minutes in Brazil and 3 minutes in Mexico, compared with next-business-day settlement for typical SWIFT transfers. But one detail matters to me: reliability. Mexico recorded a 98.6% payout completion rate, while Costa Rica managed just 73%. I think this is where stablecoin adoption will actually be decided. Lower fees and faster settlement are compelling, but businesses also need payments to arrive consistently. Could reliability, rather than transaction costs, become the biggest barrier to stablecoins replacing traditional cross-border payment rails?
