AI agents paying each other could become a much bigger market than I initially thought. Still trying to understand how quickly this develops. The interesting part isn’t AI being able to generate things. It’s AI being able to transact. Today, an agent can find information, call an API and execute a task. But eventually it also needs to pay for the resources required to complete that task. That creates an entirely different demand for financial infrastructure. Recent data from TRM Labs shows known x402 facilitators have already processed roughly 198.9M settlement transactions worth $52.7M since May 2025. Dune also recorded 15.3M agent-payment transactions through August. The numbers are still small relative to traditional payments. But the infrastructure is already being tested at scale. That changes how I think about: ➜ @coinbase building accounts designed for AI agents. ➜ @base building infrastructure around agentic commerce. ➜ @circle and USDC providing programmable dollar settlement. ➜ x402 turning payments into part of the web request itself. ➜ @solana and other high-throughput networks competing for machine-to-machine activity. The key difference is that humans don’t need to manually approve every transaction. An agent can earn, spend, pay for data, purchase compute and settle with another machine. That means blockchains may eventually process a huge amount of economic activity that users barely notice. I’m less interested in “AI + crypto” as a narrative. I’m more interested in the infrastructure that lets software become an economic participant. That feels like a much bigger market to me.
