[🚨 While reviewing recent UNECE materials, I came across something interesting.] South Korea shared case studies of pedal misapplication accidents—including footage from in-car dashcams—at a UN meeting, contributing to the development of international safety standards (UN R175). Particularly impressive were the efforts to prevent brake-accelerator confusion among elderly drivers. This was also featured on JTBC’s Newsroom today. Japan, in particular, has been proactively addressing this issue: over 90% of new vehicles produced since 2023 are equipped with pedal misapplication prevention systems, and starting September 2028, such systems will be mandatory on all new passenger vehicles. These systems limit acceleration to 8 km/h or less when an obstacle is detected ahead while the vehicle is stopped or moving at low speed—even if the accelerator pedal is fully depressed. Yet ironically, Tesla claims its FSD is safer than human drivers— but recent FSD-related accidents (in Texas, USA, June) reveal unresolved issues. The driver claimed “FSD was engaged,” yet vehicle data showed the accelerator was pressed to 100%, accelerating to 117 km/h in a residential area. It was also reported that the driver continued pressing the pedal even after the collision— resulting in a fatal accident. Tesla has stated that since the driver was at fault, Tesla bears no responsibility. Tesla emphasizes that FSD is safer than human drivers, yet it does nothing to prevent the very most common human error: momentary pedal misapplication. Of course, this is because FSD is still Level 2—meaning driver inputs take priority when intervention occurs. But if Tesla truly wants to claim safety, shouldn’t it prevent pedal misapplication even in Supervised FSD mode? It’s incredibly frustrating. South Korea also plans to mandate pedal misapplication prevention systems on all new vehicles starting in 2029.
