This is the ideal ETF list for beginners, tailored for absolute newcomers interested in U.S. stocks. I’ve compiled a complete list of the top 30 U.S. stock ETFs from ETF Database and visualized the most critical data. The top three—VOO, IVV, and SPY—all track the S&P 500 and have very similar investment objectives. However, larger assets under management don’t necessarily mean higher returns; differences in ETFs, especially costs, can be significant. For example, VOO and IVV both have an expense ratio of 0.03%, while SPY charges 0.09%. Similarly, for Nasdaq-100 ETFs, QQQ has a 0.18% expense ratio, whereas QQQM is 0.15%. Over the past five years, their returns were 16.2% and 16.3% respectively—nearly identical. The top performers over the past year and five years have been technology-focused ETFs: XLK rose 36.8% over the past year with a 21.9% annualized return, while VGT gained 33.0% over the past year with a 20.7% annualized return. Bond ETFs have underperformed in recent years: BND and AGG both declined 1.6% over the past year and posted a -0.5% annualized return over five years. The gold ETF GLD rose just 1.7% over the past year but delivered an impressive 18.2% annualized return over the past five years.
