The date has the timeline screaming crash. The open said otherwise. @xomarket asks whether the S&P 500 closes down 5% or more today. Black Monday territory 39 years after the 1987 -20% wipeout. Traders are glued to it because last week’s Nasdaq -4.5% and chip-stock washout, oil pushing $100, and Friday’s VIX jump to ~20 fed the “this time the calendar means something” narrative, even though the damage stayed concentrated in AI and the broader market held up better. I’m on NO. A true -5% close has been rare since 1990 and almost always arrived after a prior-day VIX above 23; Friday closed under 20. Futures opened green, the selloff was narrow, and circuit breakers exist that simply didn’t in 1987. Scary anniversary, not a forced liquidation. Odds still live while the session plays out.
