STARSHIP PASSED THE PAYLOAD TEST. REUSE IS STILL MISSING. Flight 13 ended with Super Heavy hitting the Gulf hard, but the mission advanced the part of Starship that matters most to SpaceX’s near-term commercial story. Starship showed it can deploy the larger satellites Starlink needs, even while rapid reusability remains unfinished. THE PAYLOAD WAS THE REAL MILESTONE About 18 minutes after launch, Starship released 20 real Starlink V3 test satellites, its first in-flight deployment of the new generation. They followed a suborbital trajectory and burned up as planned, so this was not an operational launch. But the satellites briefly communicated with the existing Starlink network, demonstrating payload release and satellite activation together. V3 satellites are larger and more powerful, with solar arrays producing twice the power of prior generations. SpaceX expects a full Starship mission to carry up to 60 V3 satellites and deliver 20 times the downlink capacity added by one Falcon 9 launch. That is the commercial bridge: Starship expands Starlink capacity much faster, giving SpaceX more network inventory to monetize. THE HARD PART IS STILL HARD The booster exposed the unfinished half of the equation. Only a subset of its Raptor engines reignited for the landing burn, leaving Super Heavy with too much speed and producing a hard splashdown. At sea, that costs a vehicle; near Starbase, the same failure could damage launch infrastructure and disrupt cadence. The upper stage performed better, making a soft Indian Ocean splashdown and remaining intact after reentry, with its heatshield showing limited visible scarring. That is meaningful progress, but an intact ship floating in the ocean is not a recovered, refurbished and reflown ship. Flight 13 demonstrated payload utility and upper-stage survivability; it did not validate orbital delivery, rapid turnaround or the lower costs that make full reuse transformative. THE STOCK NOW NEEDS BOTH This was the first Starship flight since SpaceX’s IPO, with SPCX closing about 46% below its June 16 record close. The selloff cannot be reduced to one rocket test, but public investors need more than visible engineering progress. They need evidence that SpaceX can launch, land, recover and repeat without turning every mission into another expensive experiment. Bottom line: Flight 13 strengthened the Starlink deployment thesis while leaving reusable-launch economics unproven. Starship is becoming commercially useful faster than it is becoming fully reusable—and that distinction is the whole trade.
