$SMCI Grew Revenue 78%—and Burned $6.8 Billion of Cash SMCI rose 6.77% this week, with Dell’s AI-server results providing another bullish read-through for the sector. The demand is real, but that does not automatically make SMCI cheap. The moat—and its limit SMCI’s edge is speed: modular designs, rack-scale integration and liquid cooling let it turn new Nvidia platforms into deployable systems quickly. But this is still overwhelmingly a hardware-integration business, with software and services contributing just 1.4% of FY2026 revenue. That matters because expensive components inflate sales without creating software-like economics. Revenue jumped 78% to $39.06 billion, yet full-year gross margin was only 10.8%; one supplier represented 63% of purchases, while one customer generated 28% of sales. That is execution leverage, not structural pricing power. The cash-flow problem Q4 looked excellent: $11.12 billion of revenue, a 17.5% gross margin, $1.18 billion of net income and $747 million of operating cash flow. The full-year balance sheet tells a harder story. Operating cash flow was negative $6.81 billion, while inventory reached $12.90 billion and receivables hit $6.13 billion. Combined, those two assets equal $19.03 billion—nearly half of annual revenue—before considering $34.2 billion of noncancelable purchase commitments. SMCI finished with $7.52 billion of cash against $8.72 billion of debt, so growth has been funded with borrowings and new equity as much as internally generated cash. The dilution bill The 9.1× FY2027 consensus P/E and roughly 0.5× guided sales look cheap. But the $4.31 billion mandatory convertible preferred carries a 7% cumulative dividend—about $302 million annually—and can convert into roughly 131–157 million common shares by June 2029. Against 657 million shares outstanding at July 31, that represents potential dilution of roughly 20%–24%, before other equity compensation or dividend adjustments. Even management’s Q1 non-GAAP EPS guide uses a 761 million weighted-average diluted share count. The auditor issued a clean financial-statement opinion but an adverse internal-control opinion, while SEC and export-compliance inquiries remain open. Bottom line SMCI is leveraged to a genuine AI-infrastructure boom, but the stock is pricing revenue growth before the company has proved cash conversion. I would treat it as a speculative hold until full-year operating cash flow turns positive, inventory falls relative to sales and the remaining control weakness is remediated. At SMCI, the low P/E is the beginning of the analysis—not the conclusion.
