I almost called PENDLE-a proof that good tokenomics could work..then I looked at its price history and revenue. Now I have some serious questions. Pendle is actually doing something I wish more crypto projects would consider. It uses 80% of eligible protocol fees from its V2 yield and swap activity to buy PENDLE from the market, with those purchases benefiting eligible sPENDLE stakers. So when the protocol earns more fees, there’s a mechanism for token holders who stake to benefit. That’s a much stronger connection than simply announcing partnerships and hoping the token pumps. But here’s what caught my attention.. PENDLE reached 7.50 in April 2024. As of 21 October 2026, it’s around 2.18, roughly 71% below its peak. Its newer staking and buyback model only launched in January 2026, so we can’t credit that model for its biggest rally. Plus, the revenue numbers are even more interesting. According to DefiLlama, Pendle’s quarterly gross protocol revenue fell from 9.75m. in Q3 2025 to 1.89m. in Q3 2026. That’s an 81% decline. See..there’s a weakness even with this model. If eligible fee revenue falls, the money available for buybacks can fall too and those purchased tokens aren’t burned. They’re distributed as staking rewards, which can eventually become selling pressure. Meanwhile, PENDLE still has ongoing token emissions. I’m not saying Pendle’s tokenomics are bad. In fact, I think they’re addressing a problem many altcoins haven’t solved. But creating a reward mechanism is one thing..creating enough lasting demand to support the token’s value is something else entirely. This is where I think Pendle raises a much bigger question for the entire crypto industry. What happens when protocol revenue falls sharply while token emissions continue? Is the economic value flowing back to holders actually enough to support the token’s valuation? Because if even a project with real fee funded buybacks faces this challenge..what does that tell us about the hundreds of altcoins whose holders have no clear economic claim on the project’s success?
