Barclays warns that the easiest phase of profit-making in AI stocks may already be over. Today, Barclays strategist Emmanuel Cau released a report worth attention from AI investors. His core assessment is that AI trading is no longer the nearly one-way upward market it once was. This does not mean the AI industry has lost its long-term growth potential, but rather that investors must now more rigorously differentiate between companies based on their business models, profitability, and valuations. Why is Barclays issuing this warning now? First, recent U.S. inflation data came in higher than expected, reigniting concerns that interest rates may remain elevated for longer. Second, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have pushed up energy prices—a key variable in the construction and operation of data centers. Third, semiconductor stocks have recently seen significant corrections, prompting the market to reassess the sustainability of AI infrastructure investments. According to market data cited by Barclays, the semiconductor ETF $SOXX has declined approximately 11% since early October. Over the past few years, investors could simply buy key players in the AI value chain and benefit from both earnings growth and valuation expansion. But the future may be different. If interest rates remain high, investors may demand higher earnings returns; if AI capital expenditure growth slows, revenue expectations for some suppliers could be revised downward. For companies such as $NVDA, $AVGO, and $MU, the key will be whether order growth translates into sustained profitability. For $MSFT, $GOOGL, $AMZN, and $META, the market will place greater emphasis on the commercial returns from AI investments. What Barclays is truly cautioning investors against is not abandoning AI altogether, but rather no longer treating all AI stocks as a homogeneous asset class. As the industry matures, companies with core technologies, solid balance sheets, and strong free cash flow may increasingly diverge from those heavily reliant on financing and facing uncertain profitability. Do you believe AI stocks are undergoing a normal valuation reset, or will the market over the next few years increasingly prioritize profitability and no longer be willing to pay high premiums for growth narratives?
