Microsoft just admitted its $80B Xbox bet backfired. Paired that with 3,200 jobs cut, five studios sold or spun off, and Game Pass sitting at 30M subscribers against an internal target of 77M. • The hardware race was over long ago: PS5 92M vs Xbox Series X|S 35M. Switch hit 156M lifetime, and Switch 2 reached 20M in under a year. • Game Pass Ultimate jumped from $10 to $30 for day-one call of duty, then dropped to $23 after losing millions of subscribers. • Xbox’s CEO says its division runs at margins 3–10x lower than similar platform businesses. When comparing this to subscription-based companies like Netflix and Spotify: they’ve never had to buy the studios or labels to make subscriptions work; they simply licensed the catalog. Microsoft frog leaped that step and bought Activision outright for $75 billion, when a timed Xbox-exclusive "Call of Duty" deal would've gotten the same subscriber pull without owning the entire cost of making the game. "Renting Someone Else's Catalog, except Microsoft bought the landlord." Running a console platform and running a game studio are two different businesses with two different cost structures, and Microsoft priced them like one. It's the same reason Apple stayed a hardware and OS company instead of buying up app developers, owning the platform is a different bet than owning what runs on it. Microsoft is too deep in the water to swim back to a licensing model rn. The only way out from here is exactly what's already happening, selling off the studios and shrinking back down to a platform business.
