Markets are increasingly separating growth from profitability. AI investment keeps accelerating, but expensive capital, geopolitical risks and weaker global equities are forcing investors to reconsider valuations. Strong revenue is no longer enough when the cost of sustaining that growth keeps rising. Meta delivered 26% Q3 revenue growth to $64.6B, with advertising performing exceptionally well. Yet CapEx guidance climbed to $135B–$145B, and free cash flow turned negative. The ad business is delivering. Investors now need evidence that enormous AI investments will generate comparable returns. Tesla faces a different version of the same problem. Q3 margins and EPS beat expectations, but operating income fell 56% and free cash flow declined 62%. FSD and Robotaxi may offer future upside, but today's earnings deterioration makes execution increasingly important. China's equity market is already reflecting that skepticism. The CSI 300 has fallen 20% from its June peak, losing roughly $1.75T in value over ten consecutive declining weeks. Weak earnings, property stress and fading stimulus expectations continue to undermine confidence. Yet DeepSeek is reportedly raising $15B at a $75B valuation. Private capital is still chasing frontier AI even as public investors aggressively reprice technology exposure. The contrast says plenty about expectations embedded in AI valuations. The macro backdrop offers little relief. The U.S. 10-year yield remains above 5%, while Brent has climbed past $112. Higher financing and energy costs are a difficult combination for companies already committing unprecedented amounts of capital. Geopolitical tensions are adding pressure. Washington ordered non-emergency personnel out of Saudi Arabia amid reported Houthi attacks, raising concerns over aviation, energy infrastructure and regional security. Defense spending remains comparatively resilient. Lockheed Martin reported a record $292B backlog and raised guidance, although shrinking margins and rising F-35 costs show that even government-backed demand carries execution risk. The distinction matters more than ever. AI demand can remain extraordinary while returns on AI investments disappoint. Strong advertising revenue can coexist with deteriorating free cash flow. And private valuations can keep rising while public markets struggle. The market isn't running out of growth stories. It's becoming less willing to finance them without evidence of sustainable returns.
