A decentralized perpetuals exchange has just done something that sounded like a joke five years ago: applying for a license in the U.S. Lighter, the DEX platform behind the token LIT, revealed during its investor call on October 21 that it plans to submit its U.S. license application in November, along with the potential to integrate directly into the Robinhood app if approved. LIT surged immediately by 19.7% to $3.83, with a market cap of $951 million—though it still has a long way to go from its all-time high of $7.86. What’s most striking isn’t the price, but the numbers behind it: a TVL of $822 million and nearly $500 million in perpetuals open interest. Real users are already trading—now it just needs the official green light to enter the U.S. retail market. 21Shares has also just listed an LIT ETP in Europe. This is exactly what mature crypto looks like: once, degens shouted “no banks needed”; now, DEXs are wearing suits and lining up to ask for permission to sell to banks. Is this a betrayal of ideals—or a smart move?
