mark karpelès, the researcher who reported several ledger implants, said on october 18 that he is building a cheap detector. it checks hardware wallets for added spy circuits without opening them, and he plans to publish the board designs. ledger's genuine check tests only the security chip, so it can miss these implants. a scan before setup could find tampering before the recovery words are shown. it cannot protect words that an implant already copied.
