He showed his lawyer friend a coding tool called Cursor. That conversation became a company Y Combinator calls "Cursor for Lawyers." The company is Vesence, founded in 2024 in Stockholm by Henrik Hansson and Ludvig Swanström. The two had known each other for eight years and previously worked together at Depict, another YC-backed startup. Neither of them is a lawyer. They spent months living inside one of Sweden's top law firms, watching teams burn thousands of hours manually checking contracts for small, expensive mistakes. Their insight: lawyers live in Microsoft Word, but Word has none of the tooling a modern programmer takes for granted. "Imagine programming in Apple Notes," Hansson said. "That's how it is for many lawyers." So they built hundreds of AI agents that live inside Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint, checking a document's details, formatting, and firm-specific style rules before it ever reaches a client. People at Microsoft, according to the company, "couldn't believe Vesence was built inside the Microsoft Office environment" at all. They launched in February 2026. Their first enterprise client, Cederquist, a full-service law firm, rolled it out firm-wide. Weekly usage hit 90%, from junior associates to the managing partner. In October 2025, they raised a $9 million seed round, led by Emergence Capital, joined by Creandum, Y Combinator, and 20VC. Angel investors included Y Combinator's own Paul Graham and Anton Osika, founder of Lovable. They're entering a market that already has a runaway leader. Legora, another Stockholm-born, YC-backed legal AI startup, raised $150 million at a $1.8 billion valuation the same week Vesence closed its seed round.
