🚨 ROMANIA’S LAND REGISTRY WAS HACKED. PROPERTY TRANSACTIONS STOPPED. ANOTHER REASON THE WORLD NEEDS $ICP. On 14 July, a cyberattack disabled Romania’s National Agency for Cadastre and Land Registration systems—including the e-Terra land registry platform and institutional email. The agency described it as the largest technical disruption in its history. Without access to official land-registry extracts: 🏠 Property sales could not be authenticated 🏦 Mortgages could not be registered 📑 Ownership records could not be processed ⚠️ Romania’s property market was effectively frozen This is what happens when nationally critical infrastructure depends on centralised applications, credentials and operational choke points. Reports indicate that the attacker may have entered using valid credentials and exploited known vulnerabilities. However, claims that Romania’s entire land-registry database was permanently deleted remain disputed. ANCPI says its technical and legal databases were not affected and that backup copies existed across several locations. Now imagine a national property registry built properly on $ICP: ♾️ Application code and state replicated across geographically distributed nodes 🔐 Threshold cryptography—critical private keys are divided among nodes and never exist in one complete location 📜 Cryptographically verifiable and tamper-evident records 🪪 Passkey-based Internet Identity instead of reusable usernames and passwords 🌐 Frontend, backend, database and authentication running together onchain 🚫 No single central database server capable of bringing an entire national market to a halt $ICP canisters are replicated across every node within their subnet, and their state can be audited and cryptographically verified. This does not mean systems built on $ICP are automatically immune from poor access controls, defective code or weak governance. It means governments can remove many of the centralised servers, databases, administrator keys and infrastructure choke points attackers currently target. PROPERTY OWNERSHIP SHOULD NOT BECOME UNAVAILABLE BECAUSE ONE LOGIN, SERVER OR GOVERNMENT DATABASE WAS COMPROMISED. Critical public infrastructure must be: Sovereign. Replicated. Tamper-evident. Cryptographically verifiable. Always available. The technology already exists. It is called the Internet Computer.
