Ai is not just changing how attacks happen. it's changing the entire economics of a breach. ibm's new 2026 report, real data from 602 breached organizations: $4.99 million average global cost, up 12%. ai-enabled breaches cost roughly $1 million more than that average, and 92% of the organizations hit that way had no ai access controls at all. the REAL insight is not that ai makes attacks worse. it's that the same technology, deployed defensively instead of reactively, cuts breach costs by nearly $2 million and speeds up containment by 65 days. i used to think of ai security tools as a nice-to-have layered on top of existing defenses. turns out the report's own framing is blunter than that. the gap between attackers moving at machine speed and defenders still moving at human speed is what's actually driving the cost increase.
