Most people see “web access” and think GenVM is just giving smart contracts something the EVM doesn’t have. That’s not the interesting part. The interesting part is what happens when you remove a constraint that Ethereum deliberately chose for a very good reason. The EVM is deterministic. Every node needs to get the same result from the same inputs. An HTTP request can’t guarantee that because the response can differ across time or machines. So the EVM stays isolated, and oracles became the bridge whenever a contract needs information from the outside world. GenVM takes a different approach. Contracts can work with open web inputs, while validators running AI models judge the proposed result. There’s also an appeal window if someone challenges it. That means a contract can deal with questions that aren’t just calculations: Did this happen? Was this delivered as agreed? Does this text meet the requirements? That’s the part of @GenLayer I find interesting. Not because Ethereum got it wrong. The EVM’s isolation is what gives it deterministic execution. GenVM is exploring a different tradeoff: if the machine can look at the world, how do you reach agreement on what it sees?
