The Arbitrum Security Council has activated its emergency powers. Following technical verification that the transfer would not affect other users, contracts, or chain state—after law enforcement provided clues regarding the hacker’s identity—the council has moved 30,766 ETH from the hacker-associated address to an intermediate frozen wallet. This wallet is now fully locked, and the hacker cannot access it. As cryptocurrency has evolved, rigidly adhering to absolute decentralization is no longer practical. The original intent of decentralization was to resist authoritarian control and protect ordinary users—not to enable hackers to flee with $292 million and leave victims with total losses. If an emergency freeze helps the public recover losses rather than benefit a select few, then it is both reasonable and necessary. How the frozen funds are ultimately handled—whether returned to victims or distributed otherwise—will be determined by future community DAO votes and developments.
