Even the most dedicated crypto VCs are starting to drop “Crypto”? According to The Information, a16z plans to remove “Crypto” from the name of its flagship blockchain fund and expand its investment scope to other areas; Additionally, the fund’s first founding member is set to depart, with reports suggesting the new name may be “a16z Frontier.” However, the rebranding appears less like a full exit from crypto and more like an intentional de-labeling. Over the past two years, AI has absorbed the majority of venture capital attention and funding, and a16z’s own Crypto Fund 5 has seen its fundraising target drop significantly from $4.5 billion to $2.2 billion. Removing “Crypto” from the name makes it easier to explain to more conservative LPs and leaves room to strategically invest in areas like on-chain finance and AI agent infrastructure. Crypto may still be part of their portfolio—but it’s no longer the standalone, headline-grabbing focus it once was.
