Quantum cracking could pose the greatest threat to the crypto ecosystem not by attacking Bitcoin itself, but by targeting stablecoins and CEXs. Bitcoin itself doesn’t need to be frozen or migrated—this would contradict its core principles. Instead, the real damage would come from disrupting the issuance and redemption mechanisms of stablecoins and the normal operations of CEXs. Consider this scenario: if the entire network is monitoring on-chain activity, and ancient stolen coins suddenly appear, the current methods of liquidating them could trigger alerts. This might lead to restrictions on deposits and withdrawals, limitations on converting to stablecoins, and the suspension of C2C transactions linked to affected addresses or exchange accounts. Since stablecoin admin and mint keys are highly centralized and already exposed, a quantum breach could enable infinite minting, depegging, or deliberate suspension of redemptions by issuers. CEX hot wallets, cold wallets, and operational systems would also face key exposure risks, potentially forcing exchanges to restrict withdrawals, suspend trading pairs, or implement stricter risk controls. Exchanges may freeze or limit asset movements tied to quantum risks. If such an attack occurs, more users may adopt a coin-native mindset.
