Latvian Prime Minister’s advisor Didzis Dejus stated that the country plans to allow residents to pay personal taxes in cryptocurrency as early as 2027; the Ministry of Finance has approved the plan, but technical integration with payment service providers remains to be completed. On October 15, Latvia’s parliament passed a cryptocurrency tax reform bill, shifting the taxation method from taxing each individual transaction to taxing only the amount withdrawn from a crypto investment account that exceeds the initial deposit principal. The new law also introduces a one-time declaration mechanism, allowing holders to settle past tax obligations by declaring 10% of their asset value as of the end of 2026; the declaration period runs from April 1 to May 31, 2027, with taxes due by July 23.
