The flawed logic and danger of relying on mNAV with Bitcoin Treasury Firms: To any and all who follow Bitcoin Treasury companies and tout mNAV as the end all be all, some homework will go a long way into the fallacy of your models and why knowing the entire picture is critical! 📚 1. The "Reverse Flywheel" (The Spiral of Doom) The entire business model of Bitcoin treasury companies depends on a high mNAV premium. The potential risks associated with mNAV compression during market downturns is enormous. If Bitcoin's price drops or overall market sentiment sours, a company's mNAV can compress below 1.0×, causing the stock to trade at a discount. Once it enters discount territory, the business loses its ability to issue stock accretively to acquire additional Bitcoin. Furthermore, if the company carries heavy debt obligations, a collapsing mNAV can create a severe downward loop, ultimately forcing the distress sale of core Bitcoin holdings simply to service its debt. 2. Disagreements and Manipulation in the Math There is no single universally accepted way to calculate mNAV, meaning you can get vastly different numbers depending on who is calculating it. Three common variations exist: •Basic mNAV: Uses only market capitalization. •Diluted mNAV: Factors in stock options and convertible notes. •Enterprise mNAV: Combines market cap, full debt, and preferred stock minus cash. 3. Masking Refinancing and Corporate Debt Risks - For firms like MSTR, this is a BIG one as debt is mounting at the same time a MSCI delisting is getting ready to force $2.87B in passive flows out. 4. Ignoring the Value of the Core Business Most all Bitcoin Treasury companies have no core business except to market you on their financial engineering schemes that are tied directly to the price of Bitcoin. My argument is simple: If you want to own Bitcoin, own Bitcoin. Don’t let a slick talking Charlatan sell you they have found the infinite money glitch in the matrix. Most are shills that are using crowd psychology to benefit themselves at the expense of naive investors. There is no such thing as an infinite money glitch! ♾️ 5. False Sense of Volatility Protection, and this one is IMPORTANT! Regarding #5: While mNAV resembles a traditional valuation multiple such as a P/E ratio, it should not be mistaken for a stability metric. In practice, these equities function similarly to leveraged call options on Bitcoin. Consequently, when Bitcoin experiences a decline, the mNAV premium typically collapses as well, leading to significantly amplified losses relative to holding spot Bitcoin directly. This concludes my post on a relatively popular topic that rarely is framed within context. I hope it serves you well.
