"the fingerprint includes a coarse geohash" sounds like a solved problem. it isn't. recording a location is easy. proving a device was physically there is much harder. civilian gnss receivers generally lack cryptographic authentication of the signals they use. a spoofer can broadcast counterfeit signals that overpower genuine ones and manipulate the receiver's position estimate. replay and signal manipulation make the problem harder because a plausible location reading isn't necessarily an authentic one. researchers have several defenses, none of them a universal fix. raim checks satellite measurements for inconsistencies, but coordinated spoofing can produce measurements that look internally consistent. sensor fusion combines gnss with imu, wi-fi, cellular or visual data, making attacks harder when those sources are genuinely independent. hardware attestation can help establish that a reading came from a trusted device environment, but it can't guarantee the sensor reflects physical reality. zero-knowledge proofs solve a different problem. they can prove that coordinates satisfy a location constraint without revealing the coordinates themselves. but a valid proof only establishes a statement about its inputs. it doesn't prove those inputs came from the device's true physical location. session nonces and context binding can help prevent replay across sessions, but they don't stop a forged gps fix from entering the system in the first place. that's the distinction that matters for @vangrid_io. a coarse geohash can record a claimed location alongside a content hash and anchor that record onchain. that makes the record easier to verify, but it doesn't independently authenticate the original gps reading. onchain integrity and physical-world truth are two different guarantees. the first can be checked cryptographically. the second still depends on how the location was measured, what the device can attest to, and how the system handles disputed captures.
